Ingredients
Method
- Bake the French fries according to the package directions until they're golden brown and extra crispy.
- While the fries bake, cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until browned. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in the taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until the beef is well coated and flavorful.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
- Spread the hot fries onto a large serving platter or baking sheet.
- Spoon the seasoned beef evenly over the fries.
- Pour the warm cheese sauce over everything.
- Sprinkle with the shredded Mexican cheese while everything is still hot.
- Top with tomatoes, jalapeños, onions, green onions, sour cream, guacamole, cilantro, and salsa.
- Serve immediately while the fries are hot and crispy.
Notes
Tips for the Best Beef Nacho Fries
- Bake the fries a few minutes longer than the package suggests so they stay crispy under the toppings.
- Freshly shredded cheese melts much smoother than pre-shredded cheese.
- Keep the cheese sauce warm over very low heat until you're ready to serve.
- Set out toppings buffet-style so everyone can build their own plate.
- Add black beans, corn, or diced bell peppers for even more flavor and color.
- Spicy: Add hot sauce, diced serranos, or pepper jack cheese.
- Loaded BBQ: Mix a little barbecue sauce into the beef and top with crispy bacon.
- Southwest: Add black beans, roasted corn, avocado, and chipotle crema.
- Steak Version: Replace the ground beef with sliced grilled steak.
